Keyword Research: How to Find Keywords That Bring Traffic and Money
The words people type are a map of what they want. Here is how to read that map — and pick the keywords that pay.
Keyword research is the process of discovering the exact words and questions people type into search engines, then choosing which of them your pages should target. Good keyword research is the difference between writing articles nobody finds and publishing pages that bring visitors — and customers — every day.
Start with search intent
Before volume or difficulty, ask: what does the searcher want? Google ranks pages that satisfy the intent behind a query. There are four main types:
| Intent | Example | Best content |
|---|---|---|
| Informational | how to do keyword research | Guide, tutorial, video |
| Commercial | best seo tools for beginners | Comparison, review |
| Transactional | hire seo freelancer | Service or product page |
| Navigational | google search console login | The brand’s own page |
The easiest way to check intent: search the keyword yourself and look at what already ranks. If the top ten are all guides, a sales page will struggle.
Step-by-step keyword research process
1. Brainstorm seed topics
List the problems your audience has. For an SEO learner: “rank my website”, “get clients”, “make money online”. These seeds are the starting points.
2. Expand with free tools
- Google autocomplete and “People also ask” — real questions, for free.
- Google Search Console — the queries you already appear for.
- Google Keyword Planner — volume ranges and ideas.
- Google Trends — seasonality and rising topics, by country.
3. Prioritise long-tail keywords
Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific phrases such as “keyword research for youtube channels”. Each has less volume, but competition is lower and intent is clearer, so they are perfect for new sites.
4. Judge difficulty by looking at the results
If page one is full of forums, thin articles or outdated posts, you have an opening. If it is full of huge brands with perfect content, choose a narrower angle.
5. Map one main keyword to one page
Group similar keywords together and give each group a single page. This avoids “keyword cannibalisation”, where two of your pages compete for the same query.
Keyword research for Arabic and English
Arabic searchers often mix dialects and English terms (“سيو”, “SEO”, “تحسين محركات البحث”). Research each language separately — do not just translate keywords. Check what people in your target country really type.
Turn keywords into a content plan
- Pick 10–20 keyword groups.
- Note the intent and the best format for each.
- Order them: easy wins first, money pages next.
- Write each page using our on-page SEO guide.
